Is Legal the New Free?
Last October, online file sharing site Limewire shut down. Now, at the midway point in 2011, music sales have gone up over 8% when compared to 2010. Is legal music making a comeback, or is the record industry just lucky?
Well, I think that there is a certain appeal of supporting your favorite artists. I want to see the acts that I like do well and chart well. After all, if an act isn't successful, their record label may not want them around any more.
I still think there's a shift in the music industry. While music sales are up, less artists sold more than a million copies of their album in 2011 when compared to 2010. The 8% increase includes all music purchases, and that includes iTunes. I think that singles are doing really well, while record are still struggling.
Either way, any increase is a welcome increase.
